Community Helping Community: Perth Pie Co.'s Suspended Menu

Giving back and taking care of the community is a value ingrained in every Canadian small town.  Perth, ON located only an hour’s drive from Ottawa is no exception, and the warm, friendly and caring people of this town of 6000 give back to those in need in their home town every day. One pair of young entrepreneurs have woven this warmhearted spirit into their small business in Perth, and their amazing bakery has been helping those suffering with food insecurity during uncertain times.

In 2013 Kassy and Josh became the new owners of Perth Pie Co., a bakery first established in 2006. Wanting to escape the hustle of city life, the couple moved from Ottawa to Perth, and Kassy's love of baking quickly took over, turning her passion into a full-time career. The bakery specializes in sweet treats; from fresh fruit pies and savoury meat pies, to butter tarts and maple cream cookies, with seasonal selections like pumpkin and mincemeat creations available during the holiday seasons. They also serve up hot coffee and teas for those crisp Perth mornings.

When Kassy and Josh took over Perth Pie Co. seven years ago they started the suspended menu; a way for customers to pay it forward and donate bakery items or credits to those in need in the community. Many cafe regulars double up and donate a cup of coffee or butter tart to the suspended menu when they purchase their own, and the bakery has received some generous donations earlier this year to help fill the gap during these uncertain times. If someone is in need of a meal, snack or hot drink, they simply ask to order from the suspended menu, and they are discreetly provided with an item already covered by a friendly neighbour.

With more and more people suffering from food insecurity, the suspended menu is a way to help the most vulnerable in the Perth community, and restore dignity and humanity to those going through tough times.  Kassy and Josh are committed to giving back and facilitating the exchange of compassion for gratitude in Perth, and it's what has made Perth Pie Co. such a special part of the Perth community.

We visited Perth Pie Co. on a rainy Sunday morning and donated 10 cups of coffee and 10 butter tarts to the suspended menu. We hope this provides someone in need with a treat to brighten their day, or a warm cup of hope on a cold morning.
